Guest Blog: Which is Better For You???

Today I have a special treat for you my friend Nicole Kirkpatrick is a Aromatherpy Massage, Holistic Aesthetics, Natural Nutritionist.  She is going to guest blog throughout the summer answering some great questions that will help you be your best self but also help you out on the links.  Today her focus is on breakfast that is available in the most Halfway House / Snack Shops at a golf course breaking down which is better for you and why.  Enjoy!!

 Which is better for you?

 Muffins vs. granola bar

This is a tricky one because if either of them are homemade, with whole natural ingredients, they each come with a bunch of health loving properties.  If purchased from a store however, they both are often made with tons of sugar, trans fats, and unhealthy oils to name a few.  If purchasing from a store, look for locally, homemade muffins that are made with whole grains, healthy flours, minimal sugars and no processed ingredients. The same goes for granola bars.  If these are items you often crave or eat for breakfast, then take the time to make them yourself.  Find a couple of great recipes, test them out and make them each week.  Granola bars are often fast and easy, and full of heart healthy omegas, bowel loving fibre and antioxidants.(stay tuned for a great granola recipe from Nicole)  Homemade, both are great for travelling, on the go, or playing on the course.  When buying in-store, be a label reader! Make an educated purchase by reading the labels and knowing the ingredients in what you buy.

Fried Egg Sandwich vs. Toasted Western

Both of these are great options if made at home.  Sometimes when eating these choices out, we have to be careful of the oil content that the eggs/omelet are cooked in.  Opt for whole wheat or rye toast, lightly buttered, and skip the mayo. Go easy on the ketchup as well, as it’s a condiment that is loaded with sugar!  The fried egg sandwich may be a slightly healthier choice as its lighter and simpler for digestion.  Both options come with ample protein, fibre and complex carbs to keep your energy sustaining until lunch time.

 Toast vs. Muffin

I would opt for whole wheat, rye or gluten free toast with a nutrient dense spread instead of the muffin.  Muffins are often full of sugar, unhealthy oils and simple carbs that spike your blood sugar quickly.  This spike leads to cravings for coffee, stimulates and sugary treats!  Stay away from the white bread and butter combo that leads to nothing but trouble.  Yummy toast toppers include: nut butter and local honey, homemade jam, coconut butter with hemp seeds, hummus with a few slices of avocado and hot sauce, or smoked salmon with fresh greens.  There are so many ways you can healthily your toast!

Coffee vs. Juice

Unless you are juicing your own fruits and veggies and drinking that, I would opt for coffee, but just one small cup! As long as you don’t have a condition in which coffee can aggravate (anxiety, depression, nervousness, irritability, etc.) it can be a great start to your golf game.  Choose local honey or coconut sugar if you use a sweetener, and a nut milk as a dairy filler instead of milk or cream.  Juices from the store are filled with sugar and will only make you crash and add inches to your waistline.  If you are juicing at home, I would always suggest that over coffee.  Homemade juices are like a nutrient dense power house for your body, and give you an instant energy boost!  There are so many great options of flavour combos to try, with unlimited health properties, they really are worth investing in.  Make the smart choice for your body, and watch your golf game soar!

Rickie from Overrated to Champion in One Week....

Last week there was lots of speculation regarding Rickie Fowler and him being and I quote “overrated.”  WHAT??  Rickie is the least overrated player in the PGA as far as I am concerned.  Rickie got the last word when he sank that putt on the sudden death playoff hole #17 this past weekend.

Fowler had stood on the 13th tee lying five shots behind GarcĂa and not a part of any significant discussion at all.
Rickie played the closing six holes in the same number under par and became the first golfer in Players history to finish birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie. Suddenly, helped by Garcia bogeying the 14th, Fowler was two clear. He was to sign for a 67 including that stunning back nine of 31.

Here’s a really unique video of Rickie’s Victory Lap from Skratch that was posted on the Golf Digest website.
http://www.golfdigest.com/blogs/the-loop/2015/05/rickie-fowler-players-video-behind-scenes.html

I am beyond thrilled for Rickie one of my favourite golfers on the PGA Tour.  Having said that I guess he was super focused going into Sundays game as he didn’t get a chance to remind his girlfriend she was in fact going to the Players Championship that day not the beach….honestly she takes the cake for the worst dress/sluttiest outfit for 2015 season so far.  She actually surpasses Paulina Gretzky on my worst dress list which was a very difficult thing to do.  It’s a travesty to the game weather outfits like that at a PGA event.

I honestly don’t know what goes through the wives/girlfriends heads its like they are on the way to the mall or beach and remember that their significant other is playing golf that day and show up to support him forgetting where they are.  I got a dozen text messages last night saying: WHAT THE HELL was Rickies GF wearing today??? Please respect our sport.  I’m not asking you to wear clothing that covers you head to toe but be mindful of your surroundings.  With that being said I'm so proud of you Rickie for crushing it this weekend when no one thought you were in the hunt!!

Brooke Henderson Confirms Whistle Bear for LPGA Event....

Whistle Bear Preview

The Manulife Financial LPGA Classic has announced that the fourth and fifth staging of the tournament will take place at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge, Ont., after the first three playing's of the event took place at Grey Silo in nearby Waterloo.
Brooke Henderson was in Ontario recently doing PR for the Manulife LPGA Event at Whistle Bear the first week of June.

She spoke with the Cambridge Times and here is her interview:

Turning pro just before the season, Henderson admits her first year trying to play the LPGA Tour will be a “rollercoaster” ride, especially since she was denied an underage exemption. Players must be 18 to play on the tour, unless given a pass. Since tying for third didn’t get her the exemption, she thinks it might take a win.

“Both Lydia Ko and Lexi Thompson, they all won before they were given the exemption. So fingers crossed for the next few weeks, maybe at the Manulife Classic,” Henderson said with a smile.

“A rule’s a rule and I respect that.”

Turning pro wasn’t an easy decision for Henderson, who had a golf scholarship at the University of Florida. Her initial intention was to enjoy her Grade 12 year and head down south in September. That changed.

“It was a huge decision,” she said.

“I was committed to the University of Florida and I was planning on going on a full ride and competing there and getting an education. Now, with the technology there is, I can get an education online or go later in life, it doesn’t really matter. Right now, I know my game is at a level where I know I can compete.”

Here’s a list of ladies who have confirmed their attendee for this years event: Stacy Lewis, Michelle Wie, Ko, Brittany Lincicome, Lorie Kane and Jennifer Kirby, Hee Young Park, Brittany Lang and defending champion Inbee Park.
I can hardly wait for this event to come to Canadian Soil.  Good luck to all our Canadian girls participating especially Past Ontario Junior Girl Champions at the Goderich Sunset: Brooke Henderson and Jennifer Kirby.
