Golf Digest: Sinks To a New Low....

 

For loyal viewers of my blog you all know how much I detest women who are involved with golf because of a boyfriend, fiancé, husband or family member who is part of the PGA and LPGA that have no respect for the game and the etiquette behind our dress code.  So when I was informed last week that one of my number one targets that I like to comment on is in fact on the cover of Golf Digest for this month’s issue in of course not appropriate golf clothing I was fuming…well that might be an understatement.   

Having said that I thought maybe I am jumping the gun and its fine because its their so called “fit issue.”  Then I get an e-mail from one of my members about a the “Globe and Mail” article on this very topic and think to myself this deserves some discussion on my blog. We all know sex sells however I never thought that Golf Digest was so desperate for revenue that they would stoop to this level and put a model on the cover who is not known of having any great golf talents just because she’s the fiancé of Dustin Johnson.   

So my first problem is the fact that she’s not even a talented golfer gracing the cover of Golf Digest.  Second problem is that she is portrayed as a sex object with that pose that has nothing to do with “fitness.”  It is degrading against women who have fought so hard to be seen as equals in the golf industry and in life.  I reviewed the article online and was even more upset at the lack of interview about anything important from Paulina.

Stacy Lewis, who has been featured on my blog from time to time who has won two major titles, has also never appeared on the cover of Golf Digest. Last year she was briefly No. 1 in the world on her way to winning the Vare Trophy for the tour’s lowest scoring average.

Asked for her reaction to the magazine’s cover choice, Lewis said: “It’s frustrating for female golfers. It’s kind of the state of where we’ve always been. We don’t get respect for being the golfers that we are. Obviously, Golf Digest is trying to sell magazines. But at the same time you’d like to see a little respect for the women’s game.”

“Besides Gretzky, the only woman to be given sole billing on the cover without having won a pro or major amateur event is Golf Channel personality Holly Sonders, in May 2013. (Nicklaus’ wife, Barbara, appeared on the March 1975 cover with her husband’s instructor, Jack Grout.) Model Kate Upton posed alongside Arnold Palmer in December’s issue.”

According to the Times, only 11 women since 1969 have appeared alone on the cover of Golf Digest. One of those women, Juli Inkster, also vented her frustration with the magazine.

“It’s frustrating because it’s Golf Digest; it’s not Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue,” Inkster said, adding: “I think they should maybe recognize some of the great women golfers that we have. It’s like, What do you have to do to get a little respect? I’m guaranteeing you right now, it was not a woman editor who chose that cover.”

Inkster said: “OK, so I think next month the cover should be Paula Creamer’s fiancé, who’s a fighter pilot, or Brittany Lincicome’s hot boyfriend, who’s a long-drive hitter. Put one of them on there.”

Having a fitness issue is so important.  However when Paulina was asked about the poses for the day she said: “Those were hard! I had to hold those poses in the beaming sun for several seconds, all while trying to look pretty. And I was pretty sore the next morning.”  Several seconds and she has the audacity to complain.  No person that is gracing the cover of a magazine where the focus is fitness should complain about holding a pose for several seconds.  Obviously she does not practice yoga on a regular basis.

This issue of the Golf Digest is a joke.  It used to mean something when you got to grace the cover of Golf Digest that you had fulfilled a dream of being a champion in some sense.  Now they have taken that away from past people who have been on the cover.

 

18 Facts About The Masters.....

With the Masters fast approaching I found this fantastic article in an email from Judy Madden regarding the Masters.  I hope you enjoy these 18 facts about the Masters and get your PVRs set for next weekend.

As The Masters turns 80 this year (the first tournament played in 1934), the golf world anxiously awaits the countdown to April 10th, 2014. Most people will never have the opportunity to play at Augusta National, but we invite you to play an 18 Round of Masters fascinating facts. Listen to the iconic Masters song,  and test your knowledge to see how many of these facts you know.

1.) Horton Smith was first winner of The Masters in 1934. Smith’s win was worth $1,500 from a total purse of $5,000. The 2014 Masters purse is $8,000,000 with the winner receiving $1,440,000 and 600 Fed Ex Cup points.

2.) No amateur has ever won The Masters.

3.) The bunkers at Augusta are actually filled with a mining waste from the mining of feldspar rocks for aluminum.  The result is very bright quartz waste that gives the bunkers their unique pristine appearance.

4.) Mobile phones are banned at The Masters, but there are payphones for you to use.

5.) The green jacket that The Masters champion puts on at the ceremony is not the actual jacket he will keep. This jacket is owned by Augusta National Club and must be returned before the next Masters. Winners are then given a replica jacket that they keep in recognition of winning The Masters.

6.) Caddies have to wear white jumpsuits.

7.) Bobby Jones, who built and created The Masters, played in the tournament 11 times but never finished better than 13th.

8.) The Masters has strict broadcast rules. There can only be four minutes of commercials per hour and broadcasters have to call the fans “patrons” and refer to the rough as the “second cut”.

9.) Jack Nicklaus has the most Master wins with six (1963, 65’, 66’, 72’, 75’, 86’). Nicklaus is the oldest player to ever win The Masters at 46 years old in 1986. The Golden Bear never had his own tailored green jacket until 1998, when the club learned of the oversight and corrected it.

10.) Ground crew members must wear hard hats.

11.) Winners of The Masters must wear their green jacket whenever they play at Augusta National or visit.

12.) “The shot heard ‘round the world” was the double eagle on the par-five 15th that Gene Sarzen made in 1935. That shot led to a 36-hole playoff in which Sarazen won.

13.) Each hole at Augusta National is named after a flowering tree or shrub. For example, No. 5 is Magnolia, No.13 is Azalea and No. 16 is Redbud.

14.) Augusta National is open from mid-October to late May, but closes during the summer months to preserve and maintain the course.

15.) The Crow’s Nest is a 30-by-40 foot room on top of the clubhouse which is used for the housing of up to 5 amateurs during The Masters Tournament.

16.) Magnolia Lane, which leads to the clubhouse, is 330 yards long and is adorned with 61 magnolia trees that are more than 150 years old.

17.) The Masters Tournament was called the “Augusta National Invitational” for the first five years (1934-1938)

Tigers Back...Back Again...on no not that back...

Tiger Woods has had a tough month.  Back spasms have held him back from finishing where his fans would like to see him.  Tiger was quoted on his website saying: "Called Arnold today to tell him that sadly I won't be able to play." "Back spasms and the pain haven't subsided.

Palmer responded by saying, "I am certainly sorry that Tiger is not able to play. Quite obviously, we will miss having him here this week. He called me to tell me that his back was still giving him a lot of trouble and he didn't feel he should play. I told him I understood and wished him well."

"It's too early to know about the Masters, and I will continue to be evaluated and work closely with my doctors. I feel badly that I won't be able to play in this great tournament this week."

Its defiantly disappointing for Tiger fans as he won this tournament last year for the eight time.  The Bay Hill event was expected to be his last tournament prior to the Masters, which begins in three weeks, on April 10. In each of his four Masters victories -- the last in 2005 -- Woods won at least once prior to getting to Augusta National.  I sure hope Tiger and his team can get this back spasm fixed so he can make it to the Masters in April.
